Tips to Help You Work Better Remotely

Although there are many benefits that come with working remotely, you will inevitably encounter some challenges and various distractions that can be difficult to avoid. To improve productivity and establish a better work-life balance while working remotely, here are a few tips to assist you in your workday:

  • Proactive communication

Communication is of extreme importance and it is better to rather over-communicate to make certain that all team members are updated with what’s currently happening and that your manager knows what you have to do and that your priorities align with theirs.

  • Clarify all Expectations

You should make sure you understand all your daily requirements and clarify what is expected from you to do so that you stay on top of deadlines and urgent tasks. Always make sure that you meet all of your deadlines and ask for feedback to make sure you did all that was required of you and to ensure that all your teammates are on the same page as you are.

  • Set office Hours

You should have set office hours and stick to them.  Inform your boss and co-workers when you are available and when you will be clocked out for personal time. Always make sure you are dressed up for the job, as this will make you look professional for any unexpected video meetings and it will also put your brain into “work” mode.

  • Structure Your Days

Create a to-do list for yourself and set goals, with daily scheduled breaks. Also, make sure to schedule times for deep work. A good way is to break your day into chunks of time (for e.g.  from 9am-10am respond to emails; 10am to 12:30pm work on a project). The more you structure your time,  the less likely you’ll be sidetracked.

  • Create Your own office Space

Create an office space where you feel comfortable and inspired to do your best work.

  • Tasks Lists

Break your day down into segments, this will help you to utilise your time more wisely. Make use of task lists and management tools to assist you in accomplishing tasks and to assist you in determining how long it will take you to complete them.

  • Take Breaks

A good idea is to set an alarm to remind you to take occasional breaks to stretch your legs or take a quick walk. This will keep you refreshed and increase your productivity levels.

  • Avoid Personal Tasks

You should avoid personal tasks as these will only extend your day past your regular working hours. You should be aware that constant interruptions only impede your productivity and overall performance.

  • Exercise Regularly

We’ve heard about the benefits of exercise time and time again. Exercise is not only beneficial for your mental health but is also an absolute necessity for the improvement of your overall health, helping you to combat the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

  • Plan Occasional In-Person-Meetings

You should plan occasional in-person meetings with team members (while still remaining Covid-19 compliant). Getting together with team members on occasion will help you feel more connected with your team and will enhance working relationships between team members.
